Founded as the New England Hospital for Women and Children by Dr. Marie Zakrzewska, Dimock opened on July 1, 1862. It was the first hospital in New England run by women doctors for women patients and the second in the country. The Center is noted for its role in the history of women in medicine. Dimock occupies a nine-acre campus noted for distinguished architecture (designated as a National Historic Site in 1985 and a National Historic Landmark in 1991).
Dimock Community Health Center is the largest community-based agency in Roxbury and provides a wide range of services:
Health and Community Services: adult medicine, pediatric medicine, women’s health services, eye care for adults and children, and dental care for adults and children;
Community Care (HIV/AIDS) Services: Boston Family Pediatrics & AIDS project, case management services, HIV counseling and testing, Health Access Project;
Child Care Services — early Head Start, Head Start, early intervention, pre–school services;
Youth & Adolescent Enrichment Services — after school and summer programs, Girls World, Entrepreneurship Program, Tae Kwon Do;
Behavioral Health: Acute Treatment Services (DeTox), Addiction & Recovery Outpatient Services, Behavioral Health Outpatient Services, Child and Adolescent Services, Community Rehabilitation Services;
