Another trendy and cutting edge restaurant to add to the hot, hot, hot South End dining scene. Along with sophisticated designer lofts and apartments, Banq is opening in the beautifully renovated Penny Saving Bank. Decor is made up of undulating layers of sand colored wood that flow across the ceiling like a soft wave. The restaurant is like the inside of a prehistoric whales body, as depicted by a minimalist Japanese architect. Very chic, spacious, loud and almost anonymous; it could be a spot in midtown Manhattan. You're likely to spend probably 10 minutes staring around at how interesting the space is. Little plants at the tables are a nice added touch that don't get in the way of your food. Which, by the way, is impressive in an Iron Chef sort of way.
If you have friends visiting from NYC or London or Tokyo, bring them to Banq to show them that 'lil ole Boston IS a cutting edge Metropolitan city.

Banq is way cool! The decor is really unusual - a little retro, a little modern. The food portions are tiny, but what you do get is scrumptious. I had the shrimp appetizer (2 to an order) and the short ribs which were both excellent. So many different flavors! I also tried the cod which was interesting. The chocolate cake dessert was superb. It comes with a scoop of ice cream and real raspberry sauce. The crowd is appealing. Lots of good looking people. The bar got a little too crowded for my comfort around 11:00. But overall an excellent experience. I will definitely go back.

I ate at Banq last night and it was really really good! For my appetizer, I had a little tiny beet salad (from the "Asian Amuse" menu). Cute little beets! For the main course, I had the short ribs. They were so delicious and tender - I could cut the meat with my fork. The sauce was amazing (kaffir lime jus). So were the cumin and scallion tossed yams. It came with a few other things which I couldn't tell you what they were - but they were absolutely delicious! They have an extensive wine list and our bottle was a syrah from the "light reds" wine section. They divide the sections into light, medium, and heavy bodied reds and whites - that was cool for me. The service was also really really good. I definitely recommend Banq.

Initially I was not that excited about Banq as I thought it was just another trendy South End restaurant. I was very wrong. It is a trendy South End restaurant, but it has alot of personality and the Indo-French cuisine is incredibly interesting. The service was fantastic and the price was reasonable for the caliber of food and the experience. I will def. return to Banq for my next dinner out!
